Buried in Snow

Back home in Austria after our tour with Combichrist. I had planned on getting to work immediately and finish recording the vocals for the new record, but British Airways had other plans. They decided it would be best to misplace my luggage for a week (luggage that contained necessary pieces of equipment for my aforementioned task). So instead of getting to work, I had a week to brush up on my XBOX skills. While I really do like wasting time on video games, I realized sitting around for an entire week doing nothing but playing XBOX becomes tedious and irritating. Thank spaghetti monster that in the end my bags turned up safe and intact. Now work can finally begin.

I've decided to continue my DIY approach to this record and deck out the sauna in the cellar with a bunch of towels and blankets, in effect creating a ghetto-rigged recording booth. I decided to go this route because I absolutely loathe recording studios. Everyone always staring at their watches waiting for you to deliver a perfect performance, the hours spent sitting co-pilot to an engineer, telling him which takes you like and how to comp them together, all the while his mind is focused on how badly he wants to leave because he couldn't give two shits about your music. Yeah, it's not my kind of environment. In reality, though, I'm quite proud of how perfectly isolated I was able to make this sauna, it really does sound as sonically dead as any recording studio. Plus it comes without the annoying engineers and hefty price tag.

So tomorrow morning the real fun can begin. I get to lock myself away in a cellar, completely alone, and able to focus on finishing this goddamn record. The goal is to complete 2-3 songs per day which should get me finished in about 2 weeks. We'll see how that pans out. Buried in 3 feet of snow, I don't think I'll be going anywhere. Either way, this is going to be fun!

ps. This is the part of the process I created this blog to document. For the first time in a long time I am free to do exactly what I want. I have no label, no deadlines, no one breathing down my neck telling me what to do or who to sound like. I have enjoyed writing this record more than any other. I don't know if or when I will ever get an opportunity like this again. So I want to remember it. I'll be posting pictures and entries as much as possible.

Lyrics

Here are the lyrics to "The Devil's in the Details".

Bye bye cutie pie,
You're just a piece of meat,
Details deplorable,
What would your mother think?
No disguise can hide the truth,
Hide what's begun,
Just hope you're ready cuz the devil thinks that you're the one.

I'm ready

Down low,
In a hole,
The fear won't stop the sound,
No need for misery,
You're halfway in the ground,
It moves slow,
Crawl down the road,
Crawl down the line,
You'll wind up withering with no one standing on your side.

I'm ready

Devil be my way,
Devil be my heart,
Devil eat me just say you'll be the one.

Boom crash,
Down the hatch,
Just swallow what you're told,
Life's not worth living if,
You're destined to grow old,
We can't start to heal the wounds,
To heal the scars,
As we disintegrate and scrutinize the heart.

I'm ready.

Time Flies

How time flies. It's been forever since I've updated this, but in my defense it has been a pretty wild and hectic few weeks. Between shows and airports and bottles of whiskey I've been hard at work on this fucking record... it just never seems to get done. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, though. I'm sitting here in a studio in Burbank, recording vocals all this week. Let's see how much further this takes me.

All this work has paid off, though, as you can expect to hear two new songs on the upcoming tour with Combichrist. The new single "The Devil's in the Details" and "A Nice Place to Visit."

See you all real soon.

surival

Well, it looks like we survived Russia. Not sure how but we managed to do it. Now everyone is back at home gearing up for the Triton Festival next week in Brooklyn, NY. After that, I'm heading to LA to record the vocals for All Beauty Destroyed and put the finishing touches on the music. We've got some big things planned for the next few months. Don't let our silence fool you, we're just working very hard.

In the meantime, here's a slightly stupid video of Tim Van Horn:

inch :: forward

Time continues on. The album is almost finished. I realize I started this blog in order to document the albums creation, but what should I tell you all? I spend nearly every waking minute in front of a computer. I don't shower or shave or have fun. I work. Not much more to say than that.

Paparazzi // Remix

So I did this remix for Lady Gaga's song Paparazzi a little over a year ago. A German TV station, I think it was ProSieben or RTL, hosted a remix contest, the winner would get their remix included on the digital single for Paparazzi or something. Either way, I didn't win. So since then, this remix has been sitting, alone and forgotten, in a random folder on my computer. I just stumbled across it today and figured I might as well offer it to the world, because otherwise it serves no purpose. Enjoy!

It's a dog eat dog world...

Wasted :: Life

So, lately a lot of the e-mails and messages I get from you all are pertaining to the the video for "Living the Wasted Life". More specifically, you're all asking if it's ever going to happen. The good news is yes, it will happen. The bad news is that we don't know when. Putting together a video is a really hard thing to do, you have find the right director and connect with him or her enough to where you are both working... errr, attempting to work, towards the same goal.

We met with a few different directors, spoke about concepts and ideas, but nothing ever clicked. After a few months we did find a guy who clicked. His idea was perfect and his previous work amazing. But somehow, between the who, the what, the when, the where and the why, everything fell apart. No one is really to blame, but after fruitless attempts, it kept getting stacked further and further behind everything else on the shelf. So much to do, so little time.

As "All Beauty Destroyed" inches towards completion, I think it's less and less likely we will make this video before it's release. Once this new record is done, it will be a whirlwind of chaos. We are doing something here, something that will usurp every ounce of energy and time from all of us. The "Wasted Life" video may not even be a possibility for now.

But, as much as I am disappointed by this, I'm also determined. Because I made a promise to myself and to everyone that I would make this video. We have a great concept that will remain a great concept. It's something I have set my mind on creating and I'm going to fucking do it. Once things die down I will come back to finish what I started. Besides, I have a video version of "Wasted Life" that won't ever see the light of day unless I finish the video, right?

Forward, March!

I really love making records, but I also really fucking hate it. It's always a classic bipolar situation of euphoria and loving every minute and every note of what you're doing, to be followed by the inevitable crash of writers block and insecurity.

My solution?

Remixes.

At least for me it gives me the chance to step away from my own work and just enjoy making music, because, in the end, that's what it's about. Let's be honest, I have no vested interest in writing something amazing for another persons' band. Most people tend to ignore remixes anyways. Obviously, one has to put effort into all of their work as a bad remix reflects negatively on the remixer, and likely the band being remixed will be left with a bad taste in their mouth. But, the self imposed or perceived pressure is much different.

This week has been one of those weeks. I've been wracked with writers block and frustration, unable to complete any real task. More or less sitting in front of the computer screen expecting it to do the work for me. This was quite a contrast from last week, which saw nearly three songs completed. What goes up must come down, I suppose. Just as my patience, and even perhaps my sanity were at their breaking point, a Suicide Commando remix landed on my desk.

Like a wave of xanax the relief came over me and I finally had something to work on that wasn't driving me mad. Feeling much more realigned, I can sit down to work today without my heart sinking. Thanks, Johan for saving my ass.

And speaking of remixes, here's the Depeche Mode remix that no one likes!

All :: Violence :: Destroyed

Finishing up another song this week. Many thanks to Gl├╝cksschwein and HAM. They have been invaluable studio assistants.

If you're curious about the workspace, it is extremely minimal. I have pared away all non essential items and thrown them in the cellar. Let them collect dust. I absolutely loath gear, I find it destroys all my creativity.

Back to work, locked away here in my shell, as rain continues to beat down on Salzburg. Hope we don't wash away.

Just confirmed I'll be DJ'ing at the Matrix on Bochum, Germany on June 11th... right before the Blackfield Festival.

Coming to your city?

We get a lot of requests from people saying things like "please come to _____" or "why don't you ever play _____?" So, due to the high volume of such messages and comments and e-mails, I figured I would shed a bit of light into how this whole process goes.

First off, anywhere in the world we can come and play music is a place we want to be. But unfortunately, the world doesn't work that way. Promoters choose who to bring to their cities. Without those promoters, none of these shows would ever happen. But one must remember, these promoters aren't just music fans, they're businessmen. As much of a pity as it is, a promoter has no reason to bring a band to their city if no one is going to come see them. Let's be honest, would you invest your own money into putting on a show you weren't confident you could at best break even on? Probably not.

So how do promoters know who to sink their money into? They find out from YOU! You are the people who drive the business, you are the people who come to the shows. You are the people they depend on to make their events a success. So as much as we love hearing about how badly you want us in your city, make sure to tell your local DJ as well. Tell him to spin our music, tell him how much you'd love to see us in your town. Tell promoters if you know them and tell your friends to do the same. We will be back out on the road sooner than you think, and we'd be more than happy to come to your city!

Welcome :: All Beauty Destroyed

Welcome to the new blog. I've felt pretty overwhelmed recently trying to maintain so many social networking platforms. Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, VampireFreaks... the list just goes on and on. In the end, we will be working to consolidate all updates, info and goodies into one hub, www.aesthetic-perfection.net. So while there will indeed be updates made across these many profiles, the official website should be considered the one stop shop for Aesthetic Perfection goodness.

Now, I know what you might be thinking, "this is a blogger blog, it's not really tied to the AP site". Well, technically you're right but just bite your lip and let it go. The "blog" link on the website brings you directly here, so we're headed in the right direction. Baby steps.

More importantly this blog will be documenting the recording and production of the upcoming Aesthetic Perfection record entitled "All Beauty Destroyed". I'll be updating this fairly frequently with pictures, thoughts and perhaps some other stuff. I won't be posting any demo's, though. Why? Well, I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise, would I?
